Exploring Dixie County by Bike: A Guide to the Nature Coast State Trail

If your ideal bike ride includes quiet roads, wildlife spotting, and scenic stretches of Florida wilderness, put the Nature Coast State Trail on your Dixie County, Florida itinerary. Following the path of a former railroad, this paved trail winds through the heart of Florida’s Nature Coast and offers a fun way to explore the area beyond its rivers and coastline.

What should you expect on the Nature Coast State Trail?

The Nature Coast State Trail follows former railroad corridors through rural Florida and connects Cross City, Trenton, Fanning Springs, and Chiefland. Its 32 miles are fully paved and generally flat, so it works well for casual riders and families while still offering enough distance for experienced cyclists to enjoy. The two primary trail alignments meet at Wilcox Junction, giving riders more than one way to shape a day on the trail.

For one of the most scenic rides in Dixie County, start in Old Town and follow the trail toward the Suwannee River. The route takes you across the historic Suwannee River Railroad Bridge, where you can stop to take in views of the river before continuing your ride. While the Cross City portion of the trail runs largely alongside the highway, the Old Town route offers a more scenic way to experience this stretch of the Nature Coast State Trail. The trail is open from 8 a.m. to sunset every day, and there is no entrance fee.

Is the trail beginner-friendly?

Yes, with a little planning. The paved, mostly level surface takes some of the pressure off first-time trail riders, but it is still a multi-use route shared with walkers, runners, and equestrians in some areas. Come prepared for Florida's conditions with plenty of water, sun protection, and insect repellent, especially during the warmer months.

For a first ride, start at the Old Town Trailhead, located a block behind Hardee’s, and head toward the historic Suwannee River Railroad Bridge. The mostly level route makes for an approachable ride, with the bridge and views of the Suwannee River giving you a worthwhile destination without having to commit to a long day on the trail. Set your distance based on how much ground you want to cover, then return to the same starting point.

The forests, wetlands, and waterways surrounding the trail provide habitat for a wide range of native species. White-tailed deer, gopher tortoises, and gray squirrels are among the animals you may spot along the way. Birdlife is just as varied, with wild turkeys, red-shouldered hawks, pileated woodpeckers, and barred owls found around the trail.
